We completed our trash can design with the help of our combined preschool, kindergarten and 1st grade class. The students really enjoyed coming up with a theme. We asked the students to think of a character that they would like to make. Our students love Pete the Cat and they decided he was the one for our trash can. We came up with our slogan, with the help of the words from Pete the Cat, "Did Pete cry? Goodness, no!!!", then we added our own to go with it "Recycling is the way to go!!".

We looked through the Pete the Cat books and found that Pete is always positive and loves to ride his skateboard. We incorporated those aspects into our final design. We used scrap, recycled tissue paper and glued it to the scrap cardboard to form Pete and his skateboard, the base, and the background. We used extra materials from the art room to make the signs. We used popsicle sticks to help our design stay propped up. We covered our trash can with aluminum foil that the students folded to look like a metal trash can.

The students loved learning about using recycled materials and how by using recycled materials we are helping the Earth. We learned that if each of us help and do our part, our Earth can be a better and cleaner place. We also learned that by recycling we can reduce the amount of trash that is on our Earth.
